Besides the dual analog sticks, face buttons, and direction pad, the Nintendo Switch Lite has small Plus/Start and Home buttons on the right side of the screen, and Minus/Select and Capture buttons on the left side. Nintendo hasn’t released any form of left Joy-Con with a direction pad like the Switch Lite has, so your only options for using a regular Switch in handheld mode with that form of pad are the $20 Hori D-Pad Controller (which only works in handheld mode and has no wireless connection or motion sensors) or using a risky modding kit or expensive modding service that replaces the shell and direction controls of your left Joy-Con. The direction pad feels more natural for 2D platforming games like Super Mario Maker 2 than the Joy-Con buttons, which remain a frustration for Switch users who want to play side scrollers. Unlike the regular Switch and its Joy-Cons, the digital direction controls take the form of a conventional plus-shaped pad instead of four buttons that mirror the A/B/X/Y buttons. Analog sticks sit on either side of the screen, offset from each other in an Xbox-style layout, with digital direction controls below the left stick and A/B/X/Y face buttons above the right stick. The system layout is identical to a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode with both Joy-Cons attached: screen in the center, controls on the sides and top corners. Here’s what we learned about the new non-switchable Switch. We got to try out the Nintendo Switch Lite at a preview event in New York ahead of its release on September 20.

Still, a smaller and more wallet-friendly version of the console could be just the answer for gamers looking for a Nintendo 3DS replacement who don’t want to spend $300 for a TV connection they won't use. This more affordable Switch completely lacks a docked mode or any way to output video to a TV, making it much more limited than the standard Switch. With that in mind, Nintendo is releasing a handheld-only version of the Switch called the Nintendo Switch Lite.Īt $199.99, the Switch Lite is two-thirds the size and weight of the original, and could be compelling if you only want to use it as a handheld. I personally use mine almost exclusively in handheld mode, and it’s a vital part of my commute. Many Switch owners seem to gravitate toward primarily using the system as a home console or a handheld, though.

It effortlessly switches between home gaming on your TV and portable gaming on the go, and that's why we love it. Or you can snap the Joy-Cons on the sides of the tablet-like console, take it out of its dock, and use it as a gaming handheld like a Nintendo 3DS. You can plug it into your TV and use it with its wireless Joy-Con controllers like a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch is a brilliant game system.
